Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a water-soluble, inactive ingredient; of which only a very small amount is absorbed in the gut or gastrointestinal tract and the rest moves through the body. PEG is non-toxic and has no effect on the body.
PEG is an Osmotic Laxative that increases the amount of water in the intestinal tract to stimulate bowel movements. PEG helps to relieve constipation by holding more water in the bowel, making stool softer and easier to pass. PEG 3350 is most commonly used for the treatment of constipation.
It does not work on the nerves or muscles of the gut and so does not cause any dependence or damage.
ACG (American college of Gastroenterology) recommends PEG 3350 as Level 1, Grade A laxative. As documented by various bodies, PEG is the 1st line treatment in Paediatric constipation and effective in the long term treatment of constipation in children.
