Semaglutide is a Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue used as a once-weekly treatment for chronic weight management and type 2 diabetes mellitus. It regulates appetite by controlling food cravings and promoting satiety, slows gastric emptying, and improves blood sugar control by enhancing insulin sensitivity. It also reduces liver fat deposition and fibrosis.
Additionally, it improves cardiometabolic parameters and has neuroprotective effects. It is administered as a subcutaneous injection in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It is most effective when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, and headache, which are generally manageable and often subside over time with appropriate care.
